Success Report «Pretender Success Today»© /#42/ Alexandr Marshall (GORKY PARK)! Cool Russian Rock IN-PERSON Success (Leon a.k.a. Pretender) ----------------Sun, 6-Aug-00 ----------------- Hi Folks, We had a concert of Aleksandr Marshal - a former member of the GORKy PARK band, a band which was considered one of the coolest Russion hard rock band. This band worked long time in U.S. where produced their albums. Bon Jovi himself helped them on thir album and was their friend. So anyway, this time Aleksandr Marshal (the leader) came alone as a solo project to perform in one popular night club in Riga. I decided that I couldn't miss that opportunity. I went to the concert. While we were undressing I norticed Marshal himself entering the club in the same entarnce. Actually only few people recognized him, as he was wearing big leather jacket and shadow glasses. Girls scream. I shouted "Hello Aleksandr, How about signing an autograph?!" He said - "Don't have time - later". But it seemed he was pleased by our welcome. This time I had a camera with me. I didn't have anything to autograph (because I don't have his CDs or photos), so I took a blank sheet of card stock paper and I also had entrance ticket. Before the concert started we (me and friends) were standing at the stage entrance area, where artists go on stage. I was puzzled - what to do - shoot picture or trying to get autograph. I decided to do picture first, because I thought he wouldn't have time for auto. So this happened. At once the entarnce was surrounded by security and the band members started to crawl on stage. Last one was going Marshal so I snapped a picture (look at bottom one). The concert was actually pretty damn good as he performed many old Gorky Park songs as well as new ones. he played guitar and everything was very loud and cool. You can see a couple of concert pic here. He has one song that was most popular, which Gorky Park sang in english - it was Moscow Calling. Pretty cool song. So, several times they did a trick - they were starting to play that song, audience went crazy, thay stopped, laughing and saying "Since you already know that song, we won't sing it!" We shouted "No. Damn. Give us Moscow Calling." They played it, just before finishing gig. So, after great concert I tried to sneak backstage to get autograph, but was kicked (literally very hard) by security guards. I was really pissed. Fuck security. I need darn autograph. Finally I catched one crew member who was entering backstage and gave him sharpie with my sheet. He said OK and after 3 minutes returned to me with the sheet signed. Fine. I started to hand out at tyhe bar, drinking whiskey with apple juice (if you haven't tried that - do try that coctail: 1 shot of whiskey (50ml) mix with 3 shots (150ml) of apple juice). I decided to hang out near crew entrance, so maybe could be a chance to catch Marshal on his way out. Indeed it was so. Near 1 AM the crew entrance opened and whole guys were coming out, including security, surrounding Marshal. I realised that this is last chance so I shouted "Aleksandr. Come on - you promised!!!" and to my surprice he said "Oh yeah...OK" So me and a couple of other fans came to him, security allowed us. And we took pictures with the Man. He IS BIG actually. I am pretty tall guy 182 cm(about 6") and if you look to the photo he is BIGGER than me. So that was the end. I took the picture. Hanged out for a while in club and about 2 AM went home. |
